A Quiet Place to Sit (2015)
I was looking for a good place to sit in peace for a while, away from the crowded streets, layered with shops, street vendors and the incessant humming buzz of the Camden Markets on a weekend. I ventured up Parkway away from Camden Town tube station looking for something I didn't recognize.
I came up on a small white trimmed glass front facade with elegant yet simple black typeface. I walked in and couldn't have been more satisfied. Everything around me felt organic, from the smells of the baking srpead across the counter to the shabby-chique decor. It was real, imperfect and human. I ordered a black americano and sat in the extended glass ceiling atrium at the back behind the bar and took in the space around me.
A large heavy rustic wooden table occupied the center of the room, surrounded by large classical framed mirrors and neat handmade bookcases with various assorted titles, worn novels scattered between glossy magazines. The light came from above, filling the room even on a cloudy day. It was modern without being proud or pretentious about it. I immediately felt a connection with the space and after speaking with the owners, we agreed on a small showcase of my work.
This collection of works, entitled The Essentials, is inspired by moving to a new country, a new culture, a new space and the process of making a strange environment
familiary again. We often re-
create familiar environments though sometimes we introduce new rituals. Through this process we influence our environment while it also pushes back on us. Dd Regalo.
